Happy Endings 2012
Thanks to the Miles family for giving our sweet Yumi her forever home! We just know she's in the best of hands!
Acquired: 11-3-11
Adopted: 1-22-12
Yumi's story:
Yumi (pronounced "You-me") was a 3 year old, spayed, female Akita. She came to us after losing her home due to divorce. She was living in the backyard in a very tense situation.
She was very friendly with people and other dogs, and used to live with cats in her previous home.
Here's our Relic with his new pack! Thank you to the Goodman family for giving this little guy an amazing forever home!
Acquired: 12-28-11
Adopted: 1-15-12
Relic's story:
His official AKC name is Rakki-Inu Katami. We got to register a pup to our "kennel," and since his call name was already Relic, we thought Katami (Keepsake) was a good name.
He was born October 8, 2011 and was purchased by a lady looking for a male show dog/stud for her two female show Akitas. He developed carpal laxity syndrome and he could no longer use his front legs to support himself. The owner did not feel she could properly care for him with this, or that he should be bred. She attempted to contact the breeder he came from, they agreed to take him back, but informed her that they would euthanize him if they took him back. Luckily for him (and us!) she could not let that happen.
Wonderful news is that carpal laxity syndrome is very treatable with a good diet and regular exercise. He is already fully mobile and getting stronger every day!
Kenji with his new dad, Cleveland, and his new canine sister, Nikki . Happy new life in North Carolina, Kenji!
Acquired: 8-12-11
Adopted: 2-23-12
Kenji's story:
Kenji was surrendered to the VB SPCA because the family was "moving" and he did not take to shelter life well. He was saved just prior to euthanasia for the behavioral issues that he developed while sitting in the VB SPCA. He is a sweet boy who will blossom with the right confident owner who can teach him how to behave politely with new people. According to the previous owners he has lived with children and he would do well with the right female, but needs socialization.
Kenji is doing wonderfully in his foster home, socializing well under supervision, and can live in a home with cats who are dog-trained. He is a sweet and friendly boy and may do well with the right female dog or as an only dog. He will definitely need an active home or another dog to play with!
He is ready for his forever home - are you ready for him?!
Kyto was adopted by a wonderful family from Portsmouth, VA! So happy our goofy boy has gotten a great home!
Acquired: 1-13-12
Adopted: 2-26-12
Kyto's story:
Kyto (pronounced "Kai-toe") is an AKC registered male, neutered Akita. He was born February 4, 2010.
Kyto has already been through two homes in his young life. He was first purchased from a breeder in Fairfax, VA by a lady for her daughter. Well, as they do, that cute puppy grew up into a strong adult Akita. So the family adopted him to his second home.
His second home was in Virginia Beach, VA with a young family. The father had always wanted an Akita and was excited to adopt him. He lived with three young boys (7, 9, and 15), but they were a little afraid of him. He listened well to his new dad, but mom couldn't handle him. They had him for about 6 months. The dad was getting ready to deploy for about 5 months and the mom could not live with Kyto any more (he peed on their new futon, TWICE), so he comes to rescue.
Thank you to the Kaufman family for adopting our sweet Echo!!
Acquired: 11-26-11
Adopted: 4-14-12
Echo's story:
Echo is an approximately year and a half old Shar-pei and Akita mix (to our best guess). She is up to date on her vaccines, micro-chipped, spayed, and housetrained. She is very friendly and social with people and dogs in spite of her background.
Echo was surrendered to a Humane Society in South Carolina when her family "could not longer care for her." Previously she had lived her whole life outside on a chain and was bred at least two times that we know of for sure. When she came to the shelter with one of her puppies, she was emaciated and covered in fleas. She also tested heartworm positive. Unfortunately the puppy passed away in the shelter. :'(
Since Echo is only about a year and a half old, we just could not leave her there to die. Upon getting her here to Virginia Beach, we had her heartworm test re-done to verify the results, and both the in-house test and the sample sent out to a lab came back heartworm NEGATIVE!!!
So now this super sweet girl is available for adoption and looking for her forever home where she can live inside and get all the love she craves so desperately. She would do well in a home with the right male, as all she wants is to run and play or sleep on your lap!
Who's that?! That's our happy Akari with her new family!
Acquired: 1-7-12
Adopted: 5-1-12
Akari's story:
Akari (pronounced "a-car-ee") was born Jan 31, 2010, and comes spayed, fully up to date on her vaccines, and microchipped.
Don't let the ears fool you, this girl is all Akita!! Akari is AKC registered as Rakki-Inu Out Of Darkness, and her name means "light." We felt this was appropriate given her history. She came to us after being purchased as a puppy with the intent to be bred. Unfortunately, the male she was to be bred with did not take a liking to her and would fight with her and steal her food and water. They were kept in a livingroom for a while where they were so bored they ate everything, including the walls. Then they were moved to another house where they lived in the yard/basement with limited human contact, and limited resources. The male was placed by the owner in a different home and Akari was surrendered to rescue.
She is very sweet and loving with people and playful with dogs. She would do well in a home with the right male dog or as the only dog. She does fiercely guard her food and water from other dogs (not people), which makes sense given her history. We are working with her on this.
This young girl would be a sweet and silly addition to any home, and will blossom under the love and attention that she deserves!
Here is our sweet, stunning Cocoa who has been happily adopted by the Ball family!
Acquired: 2-9-12
Adopted: 5-5-12
Cocoa's story:
Cocoa is 6 years old and comes to us from a family who was working so much, they were just never home with her. They felt that she deserved better!! This sweet girl is up to date on her vaccines, housetrained, microchipped, spayed, and is just wonderful! She would be happy to be in a home with the right male dog.
YEAY! We are happy to report that our sweet senior girl Skye is a foster failure! After a year and a half in rescue, she has been adopted by the Wheatley-Clark family and is happy to be a part of their pack!
Acquired: 1-8-11
Adopted: 5-15-12
Skye's story:
Skye is 9 years old, spayed, up to date on vaccines, microchipped, and housebroken. Matted and filthy, Skye came to us when her owner surrendered her because they were moving and could not take her with them. She has spent the first 8 years of her life on a chain in a backyard because her family was needlessly afraid of her. Despite never having been socialized with people outside the family or other dogs, she is an absolute SWEETHEART and shows absolutely no resource guarding! She has taken to her foster home and the new "pack" at Fur Frenzy with flying colors. She is still a bit uncertain, but she is learning how to play with other dogs! We just know that when people meet her, she's going to break hearts! We ask that she go to a home with children 12 or older who know how to behave around a dog of Skye's size. She might do well in a home with the right male dog, and/or dog-savvy cats.
She has been in rescue since January 2011, and has lots of life in her and lots of love to give!
After adopting Sakura, one of the NC 7 puppies, last year, the Mindar famliy came back and scooped up our awesome Rusty!
Acquired: 5-11-12
Adopted: 5-18-12
Rusty's story:
Rusty was picked up by animal control running stray in North Carolina at only 4-5 months old!! This gorgeous boy already knows sit, is crate trained, and housebroken. Can you believe no one ever claimed him?! He is up to date on his vaccines, microchipped, neutered, and ready for a forever home with human and canine friends to play with!
There's our sweet long-coat girl Chloe with her new forever home!! Huge thank you to John, Karen, and Jacoby for making her a part of their happy home!
Chloe's story:
Acquired: 3-26-12
Adopted: 5-26-12
Chloe is a 7 year old, spayed female long coat Akita. She comes to us because her family is relocating to England and felt that Chloe would not do well in the required 6 month quarantine. She has previously lived in a home with two other dogs, 16 cats (mom did cat rescue!), parrots, and chinchillas. She would do well in a home with the right male dog as she is very acitve and loves to play! She definitely does not act or look her age!
Yeay! Our Belle and Sammy have found their forever home!!!!
Acquired: 2-8-12
Adopted: 6-3-12
Belle and Sammy's story:
Belle is approximtely 3 years old, spayed, microchipped, and up to date on her shots. Sammy is approximately 5 years old, neutered, microchipped, and up to date on vaccines.
Belle and Sammy were found together in a house that had been abandoned for weeks. They were discovered after neighbors heard barking and called the local animal control in Delaware. These two will need to go to a home together with no other dogs.
Ms. Prada has found her forever home!
Acquired: 5-26-12
Adopted: 6-20-12
Prada's story:
Prada is a year and a half, born 1-10-11, spayed female Akita who is up to date on vaccines, house trained, crate trained, and micro chipped.
Prada comes to us after being surrendered to a shelter in Maryland where she was almost euthanized due to space!!! Thanks to a combined rescue effort, this young girl was saved. She is very sweet with people, but would do best in an only dog home.
Yeay! Our Ms. Gracie has found her forever home with the Pierce family! We are so excited for you Grace!
Acquired: 5-23-12
Adopted: 6-30-12
Grace's story:
Grace was born in May 2010, putting her at 2 years old. She is spayed, house trained, up to date on vaccines, and microchipped.
Grace was surrendered to the Heritage Humane Society in Williamsburg, VA after her second home (we think) surrendered her. After only having her 3 months, they said that she was too big and was destructive.
She is just a giant PUPPY! She has never met a stranger and is happy to give hugs upon meeting new people. She is very curious and wants to play with every dog she meets. No Akita aloofness here!!! Grace will definitely need to go to an active household, preferably with a male dog for her to romp with!
Thank you to Silvia Garcia-lavin for adopting our Foxy and giving her her forever home!
Acquired: 5-16-12
Adopted: 9-29-12
Foxy's story:
Foxy was born in September of 2010, so she is less than 2 years old. She is house trained, crate trained, up to date on vaccines, microchipped, and spayed. This sweet young girl came from a family who loved her dearly but could not handle her fighting with the mastiffs in the house.
Foxy is very shy when she first meets people, but once she warms up, she is VERY lovey! She would do well in a home with a male dog for her to play with!
Here is our Thor with his new happy family! Thank you to the Blankenships!!!!
Thor's story:
Acquired: 9-9-12
Adopted: 10-28-12
Thor is just over a year old and was surrendered for being destructive in the yard (holes)! He is neutered, up to date on vaccines, microchipped, and house trained.
This sweetie is great on a leash and friendly with dogs and people! He is a charmer and will bring a smile to your face! He would be great in a home with the right female dog to play with, and he grew up in a house with children.
Our Echo came back to us after a failed placement, but was almost immediately snapped up by the Johnson family! Congrats!
Acquired: 11-26-11
Re-adopted: 11-21-12
Echo's story:
Echo is an approximately year and a half old Shar-pei and Akita mix (to our best guess). She is up to date on her vaccines, micro-chipped, spayed, and housetrained. She is very friendly and social with people and dogs in spite of her background.

Caleb has finally been adopted! Thanks to Giovanni, who already has our Prada, for scooping him up!
Acquired: 6-9-12
Adopted: 11-24-12
Caleb's story:
Caleb is an approximately 2 year old male Akita, neutered, up to date on vaccines, microchipped, leash trained, crate trained, and knows basic commands.
Caleb, formerly Frodo, came to us all the way from Manchester, TN and was saved through a combined rescue effort of MANY people. He was picked up running stray, so we do not know his exact age. He walks well on a leash, does well in a crate, and is friendly with other dogs. He has already been cat tested and approved and LOVES kids!
This fantastic boy will be a real stunner when he gets back up to a healthy weight! He would do well in a home with a female dog to play with.
Thank you to Charles Booker-Jr and family for adopting our wonderful Ms. Alice!
Acquired: 6-20-12
Adopted: 11-24-12
Alice's story:
Alice is an approximately 2 years old, spayed female Akita. She is up to date on vaccines, house trained, and microchipped.
Alice comes to us after being picked up running stray here in Virginia Beach, VA. This amazing girl is great with other dogs and very friendly with people. She would do well in a home with the right male dog.
Thank you to the Ginther family for adding our rambunctious Buffalo to their home! He will get plenty of exercise playing with their small children, whom he just ADORES!
Acquired: 6-9-12
Adopted: 12-1-12
Buffalo's story:
Buffalo is a 2 year old male Akita, neutered, up to date on vaccines, microchipped, crate trained, and knows basic commands.
Buffalo came to rescue after living his life mostly in a back yard. He is just a GIANT puppy, and, as his name describes, is large (120+ lbs!), strong, stubborn, and majestic. He gets along well with other dogs and has some cat experience. He loves children, but may knock them down in his excitement, so small children may not be a good idea for him!
He is currently learning some basic training and how to walk on a leash, but is picking it up quickly! He will need a physically strong owner who has the patience to continue his training, but he will love you unconditionally in return. He would do well in a home with the right female dog or as an only dog.
Our Rikki is the first NC8 pup to be adopted! Thank you Tracy!!!
Acquired: 11-2-12
Adopted: 12-28-12
Rikki's story:
Ginger, the mom Husky/Akita ("Huskita"), was surrendered to the shelter in Lincolnton, NC because her owners did not want the puppies! Ginger was very, very pregnant at the time and gave birth to her litter of 7 IN THE SHELTER on October 26, 2012. She and her babies were saved and are now safe in foster care.
There are four female pups, and three males. We have NO IDEA what daddy was (the milk man?!), so we shall see what they grow up to be! They are already about 2 lbs each at the age of 10 days, so we think they are going to be large adults. :)
Elsa has been adopted!!! After being in rescue since May, she has finally found her forever home!
Acquired: 5-23-12
Adopted: 12-29-12
Elsa's story:
Elsa is approximately 3 years old, spayed, up to date on vaccines, house trained, crate trained, and microchipped.
This amazing girl was picked up running stray in Williamsburg, VA! Thanks to a group of concerned citizens who contacted us on her behalf, we were able to take her into rescue shortly after she was picked up by Animal Control. She has a thick, plush coat to match her soft, sweet disposition. She is aloof at first, but she warms up quickly; she loves to give hugs and kisses! This sweet girl would do well in a home with the right male dog, or as an only dog.
Mojo has been adopted! We just know his new family will love him as much as we do!!
Acquired: 11-2-12
Adopted: 12-29-12
