Congrats to our Baghera!! He landed a great family! Thank you to the Koneckos for making the long journey down and back from Mass!!
Acquired: 11-2-12
Adopted: 1-5-13
Baghera's story:
Ginger, the mom Husky/Akita ("Huskita"), was surrendered to the shelter in Lincolnton, NC because her owners did not want the puppies! Ginger was very, very pregnant at the time and gave birth to her litter of 7 IN THE SHELTER on October 26, 2012. She and her babies were saved and are now safe in foster care.
There are four female pups, and three males. We have NO IDEA what daddy was (the milk man?!), so we shall see what they grow up to be! They are already about 2 lbs each at the age of 10 days, so we think they are going to be large adults.
Ben has found his forever home with big sister Suki and the Ames family!! Congrats to Ben and family!

Acquired: 10-13-12
Adopted: 1-12-13
Natasha's story:
Natasha was picked up running stray in Tennessee and spent almost a month in the shelter in Crossville, TN. She was scheduled to be euthanized, due to lack of space, the day we called for her!!
Natasha is approximately 1.5 - 2 years old, spayed, up to date on vaccines, microchipped, heartworm negative, leash trained, crate trained, and knows some basic commands. This sweet, sweet girl is very people friendly and does not seem to mind children. She would do well in a home as an only dog or with the right male.
Yogi and Nina have found their forever home already!!! Congrats to the Hetrick family - we just know these lovable goofs will warm your hearts day after day. :)
Acquired: 12-22-12
Adopted: 1-18-13
Yogi and Nina's story:
Yogi and Nina are both 4 year old Akitas (not related). They have been a bonded pair for as long as they can remember! They are house trained, microchipped, up to date on vaccines, and leash trained.
They come to rescue after their military family, who has owned both their whole lives, is being transferred to California; the military housing there will not allow Akitas. They have tried everything, and DID NOT want to give up their furbabies, but when the military says go... Yogi is actually a little famous here in Hampton Roads, but tragically so. He and Nina got out of the yard one day and went to play on the sandy beach behind their house. Their mom could see them from the house, but was very, very pregnant and could not chase after them. Her husband was on his way home, so she went into the house to call him and ask that he pick them up on his way in. When she went out, she could no longer see them. Her husband found them down the beach, but Yogi was lying on his side covered in blood and Nina was laying next to him, standing watch. The husband immediately scooped them up and rushed Yogi to the ER. It turns out someone had stabbed him 7 times!!! The police swabbed Yogi's mouth to see if they could get DNA, but he NEVER BIT HIS ATTACKER! The family spent $4,000 to save Yogi's life that day.
This sweet pair goes to dog parks and have lived with 5 children, ranging from 1 year to 15 years old. They prefer a home where they can live inside as the only pets and get all the love that they are used to!
After being with us since August and going through heck before she got to us, Zoe has finally found her forever home!!! THANK YOU to Philip Collins!

" FOUR DOGS SEIZED FROM LOCAL HOME

WINCHESTER — Four dogs have been seized from a northern Frederick County residence because of poor living conditions.
According to a county search warrant filed Thursday, Frederick County Animal Control Officer J.J. Yost was recently dispatched for an Akita running at large in the area of the 1100 block of Green Spring Road, and to check on the welfare of animals at the residence of Tammy Wilkins in the same area.
Upon arrival at the residence, Yost noticed an abundance of trash on the property, which included food, diapers, toys and feces. She also smelled urine on the ground of the property and on the two porches of the house, according to the search warrant.
Yost then noticed an Akita running around on the property and a camper shell in the driveway that had a pit bull inside. The pit bull had no food or water, and there were feces and urine on the floor, she said.
When Yost peered through the glass doors of the residence, she allegedly noticed another Akita inside, along with moldy food, insects crawling on the counter and trash and trash bags scattered throughout the living room area.
“I could not visibly see any adequate food or water for the animal inside the home,” she wrote in the warrant.
The deputy then heard two other dogs barking inside, and saw two pit bulls hang their head out a window of the house.
She could not hear the running of the air conditioners that were attached to the house and did not see any visible food or water for the two dogs, according to the warrant.
She attempted to make contact with the homeowners, but the warrant does not say if she was successful. Yost eventually seized an Akita, two adult pit bulls and a pit bull puppy from the residence.
The two phone numbers listed for Wilkins were out of service on Thursday.
No charges have yet been filed."
This was the second time this pair had ended up in the shelter together; they had just been adopted in April 2012. They were in the shelter previously after repeatedly escaping their previous owner's yard. He finally stopped coming to reclaim them.
This tall, sweet girl is approximately 3 years old, spayed, up to date on vaccines, microchipped, and house trained. She has been treated for Lyme's Disease and diagnosed with hypothyroidism.
She would be happiest in a home with the right male, large dog. No cats, small dogs, or other small animals!!

The litter should be available to their forever homes in February of 2013.

He is good with other dogs (can go to doggy daycare), and lived with a 10 year old child. He is neutered, up to date on vaccines, heartworm negative, microchipped, crate trained, leash trained, and we are working on house training.

Koi has found his forever home with Isis and the Liang family! YEAY!!!
Acquired: 8-8-13
Adopted: 9-21-13
Koi's story:
Koi is a 2 year old male, neutered, up to date on vaccines, microchipped, house trained, and leash trained.
Koi belonged to a backyard breeder, as part of a breeding pair, who contacted us because he was moving out of state and did not want to take the dogs with him. We went and evaluated the pair and they were very sweet; in fact the owner claimed they were both therapy dogs! He needed the dogs gone by the end of July, so we were working with JoAnn Dimon of BEAR to get these guys placed. She had lined up a donor to pay for the spay/neuter and even had a family looking for a bonded pair.
I guess we were taking too long, as Koi was found tied to a planter in front of Norfolk Animal Control 10 days ago. When the family was contacted, the breeder said he did not want the male any more so he got rid of him.
Koi is now with us and we couldn't be happier. He is a large, sweet male who would do well in a home with the right large female.

After over a year in rescue, our Southern gentleman, Chico, has FINALLY found his forever home with the Wagner family and his canine sister Sidney!
Acquired: 12-16-12
Adopted: 12-31-13
Chico's story:
Born Sept. 17, 2007, Hachiko (Chico for short) is a 5 year old neutered male. He is up to date on his vaccines, microchipped, heartworm negative, leash trained, crate trained, house trained, and knows some tricks!
This SUPER sweet boy was surrendered to a shelter in Georgia by his owners; they had already paid for the surgery on his right knee, but could not afford another $2500 on the left knee when it tore. However, Chico does NOT need surgery and is COMPLETELY healed. Chico does not think of himself as anything less than 100% normal and lives life like any other Akita! Shhhh... he needs a little help sometimes, but he does not like to admit it! That being said, please don't hesitate to meet him - you will see that he is not slowed down AT ALL!
Chico is great with children of all ages, cats, dogs of all sizes, and has even kissed a ferret! He would do well in a home with the right female or as an only dog. He would prefer a home with a fenced in back yard so he can run, Run, RUN as he loves to do!!
