Zoe is a 2 year old (born approx 11.1.13) spayed female. She is up to date on her vaccines, microchipped, heartworm negative, on flea/heartworm prevention, house trained, crate trained, and leash trained.
Zoe comes to us from the Bedford Co Animal Shelter. She is extremely sweet and loves people. She has nice leash manners and will jump up only to give a hug not on you. She is well mannered and knows the command sit. She is good with most dogs, and in fact, lived with 4 others and was able to roam the neighborhood with other dogs. Evidently she roamed too much (which we discourage anyway!!) and ended up at the shelter. We were looking at taking her into rescue after she was surrendered the first time, but she was adopted out again before we could. The second owner kept her on a cable that went to the front porch but she kept getting loose and they didn't want to bring her inside, so back to the shelter she went. She was an outdoor dog but is in good shape.
Congrats to handsome little Birch, now called Anakin, who has found his happy forever home!
Acquired: 11.11.15
Adopted: 2.12.16
Birch's story:

Beniko (derived from "Beni" in Japanese, meaning red, or rouge), pronounced ben-ee-coe, is approximately 6 years old, neutered , up to date on vaccines, microshipped, heart worm negative, leash trained, and house trained.
Beniko, or Beni for short, is an absolute love. He was found running stray and was picked up locally by Norfolk Animal Control. He has one ear that is curled up, but it is all still there. We have no idea what happened to his ear! Beni is good with other dogs, so he could live as an only dog or with the right female, but all he wants is love and attention from people!!
Congrats to Cable who has already found his forever home! We knew this awesome little guy wouldn't be with us long!
Acquired : 2.19.16
Adopted : 3.5.16
Cable's story:

Beast is a Husky/Akita mix. He was surrendered to Norfolk Animal Control because his family said he was too hyper for them. He has not shown us his hyper side, though he has demonstrated his skill at jumping 6' privacy fences.
This handsome boy is great with other dogs of all sizes, though he is sometimes a little intimidated by dogs his size or larger. He is great with all people and children, and his previous family even indicated that he was ok with cats. Thie wonderful pup would be happy in a home with the right female dog, or as an only dog. He will need a family that will have time to spend with him and excercise him as the Husky side of him needs.
Our AMAZING and awesome Ryu has found a fantastic forever home! Congrats handsome boy, we'll miss you!!
Acquired: 11.24.15
Adopted: 3.26.16
Ryu is a young male (born approx July 2014). He is neutered, microchipped, up to date on vaccines, heartworm positive, on flea/heartworm prevention, house trained, crate trained, and leash trained.
Ryu spent the last six months (since July 2015) in a local animal control as part of an ongoing court case. He was finally surrendered by his owner, and we were allowed to take him into foster care. Poor boy hadn't even been allowed outside while at Animal Control because of the court case (though they wanted to let him!), so he was covered in 6 months of stale urine.
He had previously lived with other Akitas, and gets along great with other dogs; he regularly attends doggy daycare. He is a big, goofy puppy who is great with people.
This wonderful family came to adopt one dog and left adopting two! Congrats to Willow, Phoenix, and new family. Happily ever after!!
Willow's story:
Acquired: 11.8.15
Adopted: 4.1.16
Willow's story:
Willow is approximately 3 years old (born about Dec 2012). She is up to date on vaccines, microchipped, on flea/heartworm prevention, house trained, and leash trained. She will be spayed before adoption.
Willow was taken in after being found stray in NC. She gave birth to her pups (Ash, Oak, Elm, Birch, and Cherry) on 11.11.15. She is very happy to see people, and we think she is social with other dogs, but will not know for sure until after her puppies are weaned.
Phoenix's story:
Acquired: 2.2.16
Adopted: 4.1.16
Phoenix's story:
Phoenix is a 2 year old (born approx 1.30.14) neutered male Akita. He is heartworm negative, up to date on vaccines, on flea/heartworm prevention, microchipped, house trained, crate trained, and leash trained.
Phoenix comes to us from a shelter in Georgia where he had been taken after his previous owner was arrested on child molestation charges and Phoenix was seized due to neglect. The family was so mad that he was taken that they wouldn't even tell the shelter his name! So we decided on Phoenix, as he was rising out of the ashes of his past.
This amazing boy hasn't let his past dampen his spirit though! He loves kids and adults of all ages! He could go to a home as an only dog or with the right large, submissive female dog. New owner MUST provide tennis balls.
Karma and her Akita brother, Keiko loving their new home with the Kennedy family!
Acquired: 2.3.16
Adopted: 5.23.16
Re-Adopted: 7.2.16
Karma's story :
Karma is a 7 year old (born approximately 2.17.09) spayed female Akita. She is heartworm negative, on flea/heartworm prevention, up to date on vaccines, microchipped, house trained, crate trained, and leash trained.
Karma was surrendered to the VB SPCA in 2011 when her owners fell on hard times. This sweet girl was approximately two years old, at the time. We took her in on 2.17.11 and she was adopted on 5.27.11.
Sadly her second family began having difficulties and found that they could no longer care for her as well. So she is back with us and looking for a fresh start.
Karma was re-adopted on May 23, 2016, to live with a long coat Akita brother, Keiko and some kitties. Tragically her brand new adoptive mom was killed in a car accident a mere WEEK after adopting Karma!!
Thanks to Kathy DeWees with Akita Rescue Western New York and JoAnn Dimon of Big East Akita Rescue, Karma and Keiko were kept together and re-re-adopted on July 2, 2016!
Karma is VERY loving and playful! She loves all people and other dogs, and even did well with cats. She LOVES going for walks and playing at doggy daycare. Also, SHE SNORES! :) She would be happiest in a home with another large, male dog to play with!
Huge congrats to the Messina family for getting RIAR alum Ninja (son of Maki) a new little sister, Kenzi!
Acquired : 6.25.16
Adopted : 7.9.16
Kenzi's story:
Kenzi is a 4 month old (born approximately 2.14.16) mixed breed puppy. She is spayed, up to date on vaccines, on flea/heartworm prevention, microchipped, leash trained, crate trained, and working on house training.
Kenzi was taken in from a rescue in NC where she went after living all her young life as a "community dog." She was trapped by some citizens, held for the legal required time, and then transferred to the rescue in NC. We were then contacted to help her.
She came to us shy, dirty, and with a belly full of worms. She has quickly blossomed into a confident, social puppy. She loves all humans and would be happy as an only pet or with a canine brother to play with.
Rambunctious Grady found his forever home today! Congrats to John and Grady; may you have many long, happy years together!
Acquired: 5.7.16
Adopted: 7.20.16
Grady's story:
Grady is a young (born 4.5.15) neutered male Akita. He is heartworm negative, on flea/heartworm prevention, house trained, crate trained, and leash trained.
Grady was given to us by an owner who loved him dearly but just could no longer care for him. This sweet boy is great with people and good with other dogs and has even spent time with farm animals!
He would be happy with either the right large female dog to play with or as an only dog.
Thank you so much to the Tracy family for opening their hearts and home to our amazing Tora!
Acquired: 1.15.16
Adopted: 8.1.16
Tora's story:
Tora is a young (born approximately 4.7.15) female, spayed Akita. She is up to date on vaccines, on flea/heartworm prevention, microchipped, house trained, crate trained, and leash trained.
Tora, which is Japanese for "tiger" (because she's brindle! Get it? Get it?) comes from Tarboro, NC where she was surrendered to local animal control for being "too hyper." She spent the majority of her young life in a crate (can't imagine why she was hyper!) and has the urine stains to prove it. In addition to being covered in fleas, she also had a bad urinary tract infection when we picked her up.
This sweet puppy will need a firm but gentle home to help her grow into a confident adult. She is very social with other dogs and would love a home with a large male to play with!
We are so sad to see him go, but we couldn't have asked for a better family for our little Rell!! Thanks to the Fry family for opening their hearts and home to not one but two RIAR orphans and getting a little brother for RIAR alum Lumen (formerly Kailee)!
Acquired :7.20.16
Adopted : 8.15.16
Rell's story:
Rell is a young (born approx 2.9.16) neutered male Akita mix. He is up to date on vaccines, microchipped, on flea/heartworm prevention, house trained, crate trained, and leash trained.
Rell comes to us from Georgia. He and his sister were adopted from a shelter there and then tied out in the yard. His sister, Yoyo, chewed through the rope and ended up being hit by a car. The owner took them to the ER, but couldn't even afford the $50 office visit fee. They were re-surrendered to the shelter. Rell and Yoyo were pulled by Akita Rescue Society of Florida (ARSF) and Rell was sent to us. His sister is still undergoing medical care for her crushed pelvis and leg that was fractured in three places. If anyone would like to donate to her care, please visit www.arsf.org .
Rell is super friendly with people, other dogs, and even gets along with cats!
Huge congrats to Yoshi and his new family! Happy adoption, Yoshi!
Acquired : 6.10.16
Adopted: 9.4.16

Yoshi is a 2 year old (born 6.24.14) male, neutered Akita. He is microchipped, up to date on vaccines, heartworm negative, on flea/heartworm prevention, house trained, crate trained, and leash trained.
Yoshi was saved in Chesapeake, VA by one of our volunteers who saw him on craigslist and then posted free on FB. This sweetie LOVES people, and great with other dogs both large and small!
Huge congrats to Angelo who found his forever home with RIAR alum Luna (formerly Cutie)! This is the third Akita this amazing family has adopted from us! <3
Acquired: 6.5.16
Adopted : 9-7-16
Angelo's story:
Angelo is an adult (born 6.28.09) male, neutered Akita. He is up to date on vaccines, heartworm negative, on flea/heartworm prevention, microchipped, house trained, crate trained, and leash trained.
Angelo is an ADORABLE, laid-back boy! He is great with all humans and all dogs, large and small. This goof ball was given up by a family who could simply no longer care for him, though they had had him since he was a puppy and loved him dearly. He would be happy either as an only dog or with a female canine companion.
Yay! After almost a year in rescue, Yoshii has found a most amazing forever home with three canine brothers!
Acquired: 10.12.15
Adopted: 9.25.16
Yoshii's story:
Yoshii is an adult (born 9.1.10) female Akita. She is spayed, microchipped, up to date on vaccines, heartworm negative, on flea/heartworm prevention, house trained, crate trained, and leash trained.
Yoshii was surrendered to our rescue because of anxiety issues. We are working with her on it and she is making progress. Yoshii is friendly with all people, kids, and other dogs of all sizes. She would be happy with the right male dog, or as an only dog. Yoshii will need a home with a family who has plenty of time for her.
Happy dance!! This fantastic family adopted Akiko AND Busa together! Wow! Happy new beginning!
Hayabusa's story:
Acquired: 9-11-15
Adopted: 9-26-16
Hayabusa ("Busa") is an adult male, neutered Akita born 12.13.07. He is heartworm negative, on flea/heartworm prevention, up to date on vaccines, microchipped, house trained, crate trained, and leash trained.
Busa was surrendered to Suffolk Animal Control because his family was moving. He had been with his previous family since he was a puppy. Busa is very people friendly and loves to play with other dogs of all sizes!
Akiko's story:
Acquired : 12.10.15
Adopted: 9.26.16
Akiko is an approximately 6 year old spayed female Akita. She is up to date on vaccines, microchipped, heartworm negative, on flea/heartworm prevention, house trained, crate trained, and leash trained.
Akiko was found running stray in Richmond and bounced around between a few homes before ending up in a local shelter. She is very friendly with people and calm with other dogs. She can even go to daycare. This adorable girl has a quirky, short little tail. It does curl enough to touch her back when she gets excited.
She would do well as an only dog, or with the right large male dog.
Congratulations to Keenu, who found her amazing forever home!
Acquired: 8.2.16
Adopted: 11.10.16
Keenu's story:
Keenu is an adult (born 11.12.12) female, spayed, long coat Akita. She us heartworm negative, up to date on vaccines, microchipped, on flea/heartworm prevention, house trained, crate trained, and leash trained.
Keenu comes to us after her family lost their home in foreclosure. She came to us and her senior Malamute sister, Kona, went to Malamute rescue. Keenu is a very sweet, low-key girl who is good with other dogs and is able to go to doggy daycare. She would do well in a home with the right mellow male. She has never lived as an only dog, so we're not sure how she would feel about that.
Congratulations to Dina and her new family!! <3
Acquired: 5.18.16
Adopted: 11.10.16
Dina's story:
Dina is a young adult (born approximately 5.15.14) female Akita. She is heartworm negative, on flea/heartworm prevention, up to date on vaccines, spayed/neutered, microchipped, house trained, crate trained, and leash trained.
Dina came to us from a shelter in York, SC where she and her bonded mate, Moses, were surrendered by an owner who could no longer care for them. Sadly, we lost Moses to mushroom poisoning on August 28, 2016.
She is very sweet with people and gets along with other dogs (of all sizes), kids, and even cats!
Congrats to Skye and her new family!
Acquired: 10.23.16
Adopted: 11.22.16
Skye' story:
Skye is a spayed female puppy (born approx 4.23.16). She is up to date on vaccines, on flea/heartworm prevention, microchipped, working on house training, crate trained, and leash trained.
Skye comes to us from a husky rescue in Texas, who originally pulled her out of a shelter in Louisiana. She and her brother, Lotus, were supposed to be Husky/Akita, however they are older than originally thought, and smaller than either breed. They definitely have Husky in them, but Husky and what? Australian Cattle Dog? Malinois? Our vet guess they will be no more than 50 lbs as adults.
Either way, this sweet girl is very friendly with other dogs and regularly attends daycare. She would LOVE a home with another medium or large male to play rough with. :-)
Congrats to our Ronin who hit the puppy jackpot with the Fennig family and canine sister Abby!
Acquired : 4.15.16
Adopted : 12.2.16
Ronin's story :
Ronin is an adult male (born approx 4.15.10) Akita mix. He is up to date on vaccines, on flea/heartworm prevention, microchipped, house trained, crate trained, and leash trained.
This poor boy has had a ROUGH life so far. He was found running stray in North Carolina. He has scars all over his face and legs suggesting that he has fought with other animals, his ears are battered, he had several tick-borne diseases, he has what appears to be birdshot and wire embedded in his shoulder, and heartworms. Whew! Through all of that, this sweet boy still loves people, ignores other animals, and just wants love (and tennis balls).
Yay!! RIAR repeat adopters, the Tolentino family, have taken Kabuki into their hearts and home!
Acquired : 8.23.16
Adopted : 12.10.16

He and his sister, Skye, were supposed to be Husky/Akita, however they are older than originally thought, and smaller than either breed. They definitely have Husky in them, but Husky and what? Australian Cattle Dog? Malinois? Our vet guess they will be no more than 50 lbs as adults.
Either way, this sweet boy is very friendly with other dogs and regularly attends daycare. He would LOVE a home with another medium or large female to play rough with. :-)
Huge congrats to Spartacus, who got his holiday wish: a family to call his own! <3

Spartacus' story:
Spartacus is a 2 year old neutered male, who is up to date on vaccines, microchipped, heartworm negative, on flea/heartworm prevention, house trained, crate trained, and leash trained.
Charlie and Spartacus come to us as a mother/son bonded pair from a family who could not longer care for them. Spartacus is good with other dogs, and previously lived with children, though he is a little hyper so small children need to watch out! :)
What an AMAZING way to end this year!! CONGRATS to Reyka who joins Akita/shepherd brother, Chance, in the Corl family!! <3 Reyka was found stray in Michigan in August 2015 and has been with us since September of that year. She came with every intestinal parasite you can think of, fly eaten ears, emaciated, urinary tract infection, and heartworms! She later developed several mammary tumors, one of which required surgery. But we got her healthy and finally found her forever home!!
Acquired : 9.12.15
Adopted: 12.31.16
Reyka's story:
Reyka is about 4 years old (born approx 9.12.12), will be spayed, is microchipped, up to date on vaccines, on flea/heartworm prevention, house trained, crate trained, and leash trained.

This amazing girl loves all people (even children), is great with dogs of all sizes, and has even been ok with cats. She would love a home with a male dog to play with.
